Gin is defined as "a strong alcoholic beverage that is produced by distilling fermented grain mash, and gets its specific taste through the addition of juniper berries."
This definition does not, of course, apply fully to non-alcoholic gin. That is why gin is used when the taste of the drink resembles that of alcoholic gin and / or can be drunk in the same way. Regular gin tastes very dry, so it is usually mixed with tonic or another soda. And you can also do that with gin without alcohol.
